After a few hectic weeks travelling around Europe, a stay in the High Tatras Mountains in Slovakia was just what I needed. Nestled in the mountains high above Slovakia, the picture perfect lake side hotel felt like it was out of a movie.
After an overnight train, a tram ride through the mountains I arrived in what can only be described as one of the most amazing hotels I have seen. Set in the mountains overlooking a small lake, the Grand Hotel Kempinski was pure luxury and I felt like I was in fairytale. I was welcomed by the friendliest staff and a cold drink which was just what I needed.
I immediately realised that this stay was going to be so much more than just visiting another destination. Especially after an early check in, friendly staff and an extensive buffet.
Accommodation in the High Tatras Mountains
Upon being shown to my room, I was sure I was in a dream. Every aspect of the room had me in awe. The hotel has 98 rooms and suites each offering something different, but all at a very high standard. I was fortunate enough to have a valley view room and balcony. The room offered spectacular views over the surrounding area and High Tatras Mountains.
No stay here is complete without a trip to the spa. The pool is nothing short of spectacular with a view over the glacial lake Strbske Pleso. If you can tear yourself away from the view, there are numerous spa treatments to be enjoyed, a fitness centre, whirlpool and relaxation room. For those that don’t have the strength to leave, the wonderful staff will happily serve you any food and beverages you desire.
Things to do
If you feel the need to venture outdoors there are numerous activities to keep you occupied.
In the summer, you can opt to hike one of many hiking trails. For those looking for an easy walk, a stroll around Strebske Pleso is a wonderful option. For those looking for a more strenuous hike, there are numerous options to suit your requirements.
Other activities include hiring a small boat, reading a book by the shores of the lake, a game of golf, taking a chair lift to see Strbske Pleso from above, hiring a bike or segway. Because there are so many options – you will not get bored.
In winter, the area becomes a winter wonderland. The area is home to on and off piste skiing, dog sledding or even winter hiking.
Whether you decide to visit in summer or winter there is something for everyone to enjoy!
How to do get there
The hotel is a little off the regular tourist grid but it is well connected. The hotel can be reached by road or rail from Poprad. I took an overnight train from Prague arriving into Poprad early in the morning. From Poprad, it was approx 1 hour by the electric train to reach Strbske Pleso. Best of all, the electric rail from Poprad is inexpensive at around 2 Euro.
Alternatively, the hotel is approx 25min drive from Poprad Airport by car.
Where to stay
Grand Hotel Kempinski – Without a doubt, one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. What’s more, the hotel was very affordable for such luxury at around $220 AUD per night.
This area offers affordable luxury and the to ability to get a little off the beaten track – if this sounds appealing this is the place for you.
